Elias has arrived!

Hi everyone, it has been a mental few weeks, just trying to wrap up projects & clear my schedule for my son being born.

We welcomed our son Elias into the world on June 23rd at 11:45 - coincidentally enough Elias was Walt Disney’s middle name. He is doing great, he had us all worrying for a little while, needing some extra TLC in Special Care, but he has came through it now.

As stated on a previous post, I was working on a football related piece, which I can now reveal as the piece below. The work features Scott Brown and Billy Mcneil, two influential captains and players during their time at Celtic FC. The effort that went into this artwork was huge seeing as there are four separate elements - each of which could be their own featured print. In the end, I am happy with how it has turned out and have a few ideas for what to do with it.

I will now be taking a break from any creative work for the next few weeks as I focus on settling Elias into our home and taking care if him. I have two other projects that I need to wrap up so these will be my priority once I return from paternity.

I will also be focusing on completing the animation that my oldest son Logan & I were previously working on.

As I also mentioned before, I have been sketching some character designs too, so I have included these below too - they may one day find themselves being digitised in some form, as past sketches have.

Until next time!

More updates to follow.

Hi all, been a little longer than I originally intended to get this blog post created. Since the last post, I have created quite a few new pieces of artwork which I’ll be showing off today. First of all, I completed the final Pokemon design to match the previous work- Charmander from the original starters. This will probably be my last Pokemon design, at least for the time being.

In addition I recently completed four logo designs for a client in the US. These are still under wraps for the time being but will likely be able to showcase them by the time of the next blog post.

As mentioned previously, I started work on something local. I created this digital painting of a local institute, know as Twechar Miners Welfare & Social Club, and have started a giveaway through Campbell Animation. I will also be donating a copy of this print to the club itself.

Finally, I created this piece of artwork for a close friend, recreating him and his daughter as Superman. This was printed and framed for him, which you can now see below.

I have also recently been working on new character sketches, for nothing in particular, to keep my ability sharp. I will upload some of these in the next blog post, as well as a few other things.

What next? I have something planned which I am hoping will be very successful and will be football related. I also plan on doing another few digital designs but will soon be stopping work for around a month whilst I focus on my new little boy, who is due on June 11th.

Coming back from that I will turn my attentions back to finishing the animation for my son with his voiceover, and the contract I've got for someones wedding photo. Next update will be a few weeks time, see you then!

More Recent Work

Hi all, I’ve been quiet recently on the blog but I do have a few pieces to share so I will be keeping it short and sweet.

Recently, I created these two items of Pokemon artwork, with a third currently planned (Charmander.) These pieces were enjoyable to work on and are just for fun though I am selling the prints at the moment. I plan to finish the aforementioned Pokemon and will probably do a giveaway on the Campbell Animation page.

Bulbasaur & Squirtle, two of the original and best Pokemon.

I’ve have also created more superhero designs for clients. First we have one done for a little boy, turning him into Spiderman. Feedback from him was great and he was elated at his new secret identity.

Next was two brothers, both transformed into Iron Man. As you can see below, the image came out great.

As previously mentioned, I have something in the works locally and will also be working on something for a close friend so will reveal that in due course.

I have created another part of the Scottish design I previously mentioned and am now closing in on wrapping work up on it.

Lastly, I am in the process of creating two new logos for our client in New York, currently going through some design samples before we begin honing down to the finished products.

I will be back with another update soon to showcase the other work mentioned in this post. As of right now, the animation for my son is on hold until I have worked through a number of my graphic design products.

Plenty happening behind the scenes

Since the previous update to the blog, I’ve completed work on a few new projects that I am now able to share. I created another Iron Man design for a client that approached me through Campbell Animation. They requested that the featured child, Albie, be the central focus of this new piece, so I removed Spider-Man completely from the design. The main challenge of the work done on this design was getting the child's skin tone correct – although he has light skin, it wasn't quite working alongside the other colours. As a consequence of this, I had to make his skin darker than I would have preferred. The finished piece can be seen featured below.

In addition to the above, I completed another section of the Scottish design I have discussed previously, which is roughly six main parts, of which I have currently finished three. This will be finished in May and hopefully soon after I will be able to show it off. I am particularly excited about showing off this project.

To give some insight into my process - I will occasionally do a character design between big projects, or digitise a sketch. Below is a character design for a fox-type character that I first sketched up a few years ago and have now finally digitised. When I am looking for some design work to do for fun to break my week up, I tend to look through my back catalogue of sketches and choose one to breathe life into.

Initial sketch of the character. The arms and legs don't quite look right.

With this particular character, I imagined him as the type you'd see in a platforming video game, along the lines of Spyro or Crash. As you can see from my original sketch, it isn't perfect and required some tweaking to give the character a more natural pose in its digital form. The arms behind the head pose is my reference to Son Goku from early Dragonball – his carefree attitude is one that I believe this character would share.

I have also done more work recently with Kenny from MoorLife, working on the MoorBeauty brand again, building on work from a previous design. At first we decided on a grey colour, as it had been in the first design, but after discussing with some of his colleagues we needed it to be female oriented (the target market) and so we made alterations to include pink colour, eyelashes and petals on the vines. Overall, I think this was the correct decision from their team. In discussion with Kenny, he is going to be sending across samples from the MoorLife clothing line, therefore I will discuss that at a later point and do a review of these when they arrive.

The original concept we decided on wasn't quite right.

The client was much happier with these designs to really convey the market he was looking to capture.

In the previous post I mentioned that I was working on a special project with my son. This project has developed further since the last post and I now have characters designed, storyboarded and the animatic put together. The next stage will be to digitise the them and get the character sheets done. Soon after this I will be ready to start the animation process.

Additionally, I have decided to do another drawing challenge as I had done several years ago. I will be designing characters based on profiles generated randomly online. I plan to do around 31 of these (a months worth) though won't necessarily be doing it every day. So expect many sketches to surface on the blog too over the next few posts.

Next I intend to continue work on the aforementioned Scottish design and I have a Pokemon related idea that is currently in the process of printing and will discuss further in the next post. I also have plans for a project that will hopefully raise some funds in my local area.

More updates to come soon on this.
